On the stage at Big Hair last Thursday night was a sheet covering a body. When the house lights dimmed, an overture began that included themes from Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner’s respective careers. Maegan Mandarino, the only actor in this play, entered from backstage as Dr. Frankenstein and animated the body on the slab into Roseanne Roseannadanna.
Then, for the next hour, Mandarino acted as both beloved comedians Gilda Radner and Gene Wilder. She followed their love story from the perspective of their characters Frankenstein and Roseannadanna. At one point, she played both characters simultaneously, continuously switching from one to the other as she portrayed the couple on a date. She also included their respective jokes, scenes from film and TV, and comic songs.
The best parts of this show were Mandarino’s rendition of Radner’s songs, like “Ballin’ the Jack” from Haunted Honeymoon, or “Let’s Talk Dirty to the Animals” from Radner’s special Gilda Live. Mandarino was confident, displaying assured vocals and endearing Golden Age of Broadway-style choreography. She also showed many clips from their real-life performances and interviews during her costume changes.
Unfortunately, the technical elements hampered the relationship between the audience and the performer. The lights went down between jokes. There were at least half a dozen costume and wig changes. These choices limited Mandarino’s ability to maintain a comic pace.
Still, there is value in the production. Theater is a way to see through time. Usually, revivals are of plays, not standup comedy. It is a rare and welcome opportunity to see these performances from decades ago brought to life. Watching it made me long for the real performers. And perhaps, if I hadn’t seen the clips, I would be more present and forgiving with their avatar in the room.
