The tale of Cinderella has been traced back to the ancient Egyptians, with so many variations both in film and stage. However, there is always excitement when seeing it be performed. Perhaps in this case, because it’s being performed (by Storybook Theatre) for elementary school-aged children who possibly have never seen it before.
Geared specifically towards children, Storybook Theatre’s version of Cinderella is filled with upbeat songs and puppets. Direction, book, and lyrics are by Lloyd J. Schwartz, and original music and songs by Michael Paul that are exciting and not too lengthy.
The children are able to get involved and interact with the cast members throughout the show. Their being invited onto the stage, I think , is a lovely way for young children to be introduced to theater and all of its unique possibilities for storytelling.
All of the performers do a great job. Jessica Rawls is hopeful and bright in the title role, despite being mistreated by her Stepmother (Barbara Mallory). Prince Charming (David Johnson) is just as charming as his name suggests, and Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother (Scottie Nevil) is both whimsical and positive.
This is a quite marvelous option, if you’re looking to take your children, or introduce them, to some of theater’s more innocent joys.
