In this world premiere, Luzmi follows the titular character (Stephanie Hoston), a scientist, as she journeys back to her home of Colombia, discovering more than she could even imagine. Playwright Diana Burbano’s appreciation and love for Colombia is evident. However, the subject matter faces the harsh truths of just how difficult it can be to preserve land and to keep traditions and cultures intact.
It is beautiful and touching to see the idea of “belonging” played out onstage. Hoston does a wonderful job of interpreting a determined yet vulnerable woman who is seeking to belong and to discover her roots. The complexity of her character grows as the story unfolds and she sees first-hand the nature of land seizure and corruption. Her love interest that she encounters shortly after arriving in Colombia, Carlos (Peter Mendoza), serves as a strong presence who further inspires and encourages Luzmi to not only fight for what is right, but to also be proud of where and who she comes from.
There is a clear divide between locals catering to tourism as a means to gain money and survive, versus preserving native land and the right of indigenous people to occupy it. And this is the divide that Burbano dramatizes so poignantly.
There are so many standout performers within this production — too many to name. However, the way in which every actor works so seamlessly in the ensemble is evident, along with the imaginative use of props and puppetry. Puppet designer Beth Peterson has created intriguing and colorful puppets, while scenic and production designer Jesus Hurtado’s innovative and fun props bring the show to life even more. The passion is palpable in this refreshing, educational production that clearly has a youth audience in mind.
