A Case for Laboratory Theater

We can look at a recent Facebook post by L.A.’s intimate theater veteran and television star French Stewart advocating for a “Pro-99” Actors Equity Association referendum vote to support theaters of up-to-99-seats. “99 pays me with beauty. And citizenship. It gives me the opportunity to be an art prospector. I'd like the right to measure my own wealth,” Stewart wrote. BY BRYAN BROWN AND OLGA PETRAKOVA

Michael Phillip Edwards: The Burn to Write

I woke up one night and saw a shadow "humping" my nether region. At first I thought I was dreaming but then I realized I wasn’t and shoo'd whatever it was away. After that, I became fascinated with succubus lore, did some research and waited for the inspiration for this play to arrive.-- writer-director Michael Phillip Edwards

Building Audiences in L.A.

Branding for L.A. Theater has been an issue for some time. Hashtagging #LAThtr has been the best we’ve been able to come up with, and its use since its inception in 2010 has been inconsistent, though promising. Pro 99 March

An estimated 350-400 actors marched from Crown City Theatre on Camarillo up Lankershim to AEA, where they had a rally led by Frances Fisher, Benjamin Burdick and Jeff Perry. French Stewart joined Fisher and Perry at the start of the march for a press conference for TV reporters that was held on Lankershim at the bottom of the ZJU block. The march began at about 3:30 or so and was strung out along Lankershim for blocks and caused a mid-afternoon traffic jam from passing rubberneckers. Many cars honked horns in support. The actual rally on the sidewalks in front of and across the street from AEA began around 4 p.m. and lasted around an hour.
