Once there was a small island full of people who loved to dance. The government of the island noticed that most of the islanders had to dance on a rocky hillside – There were a few plush places down by the beach but, for the most part, only tourists got to dance there. So the government sent out a survey and asked: “Do you want to dance in the rocks?” And most people said no. So the government issued a declaration that dancing on the rocky hillside was now forbidden. So the islanders asked: “Where will we dance?”

Is it an oxymoron to speak of “a cappella karaoke”? Yet that’s what New York’s durable The Wooster Group performs in its return to REDCAT with a “record album interpretation” of the fabled 1976 Rounder Records release featuring Sister R. Mildred Barker and the United Society of Shakers of Sabbathday Lake, Maine. Well, Side “A” anyway, the flip side in this 50-minute presentation remains unsung. BY MYRON MEISEL
Playwright-pianist Allen Barton was lulled into the world of Scientology via acting teacher Milton Katselas, and others at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. Barton's new play "Disconnection" (Skylight Theatre Company at the Beverly Hills Playhouse) grapples with his association and disassociation with what he describes as the increasingly militant cult. Says Ilana Turner of her play O REJANE: "One day, magically, my dear family friend Willie told me about her grandmother. Willie’s grandmother, Réjane, was the subject of the Toulouse-Lautrec print that was hanging on Willie’s wall. Having spent my childhood wanting to leap into Toulouse-Lautrec paintings, I was immediately intrigued." --BY DEBORAH KLUGMAN
A hidden secret treasure of the local scene, Musical Theatre Guild for over 15 years has unearthed obscure, neglected or forgotten musicals, or ones that were never successful enough in New York to make it to Los Angeles. . . Of course, there’s always a catch. In a most resourceful compliance with the Equity Staged Reading code, each of these usually quite challenging extravaganzas is rehearsed within 25 hours, primarily over a long weekend preceding the performance.
