I Am Vertical
The Flight Theater at The Complex
Reviewed by Vanessa Cate
Through June 24
For many years Michaela Myers has been on a personal journey, dealing with crippling anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. They say that artists are more prone to these illnesses, and as any true artist Myers has channeled her pain into something we can share. However, rather than using a traditional approach to telling her story, Myers infuses it with a good deal of humor and levity, along with a commendable level of honesty. You can’t help but laugh at times, although the subject matter is bleak. The humor also helps gain Myers some truly poignant moments.
I Am Vertical is compelling because it looks at something that affects so many of us while still managing to entertain. There is still a lot of potential for growth here, and with stronger direction and vocal work the show could be even better.
